Traditional Ukrainian Food

The most well known dish from Ukraine is Borsch a recipe that is very popular throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.

Here are the basic ingredients you will need to make this soup:

  • 4 beets, chopped
  • 1 pound beef
  • Beef broth – 7 cups
  • 1 white onion
  • 3 carrots
  • 1 potato
  • Cabbage
  • Thick sour cream
  • Splash of red wine

Holubtsi

Holubtsi is a dish typically made from cabbage leaves stuffed with mince and rice.

Ingredients:

  • Cabbage leaves
  • Single white onion
  • Vegetable oil
  • Cooked white rice
  • 1/4 pound of ground beef
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of tomato juice
  • Splash of vinegar
  • Salt and pepper as required

Varenyky

Varenyky is a dish made from dough dumplings stuffed with meat and/or vegetables. There are many different fillings, this is just one of the most popular ones.

Ingredients:

Dough

  • 3 1/2 cups of flour
  • Vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup of water
  • Salt as required

Filling

  • Mashed potato with butter (3 cups)
  • 1 finely chopped white onion
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Oil
  • Cheese – cottage style
  • Meat is optional
